Absorption is heavy aggression meeting heavier passive liquidity — and losing.
Someone is hitting the bid hard. Hundreds of contracts. Then hundreds more. And price does not go down. That is absorption: a large passive participant sitting at a level, filling every aggressive order thrown at them, and refusing to move.
The core idea
Aggression is not the same thing as price movement. When you see a lot of the first and very little of the second, you have found someone big on the other side.
01 — How it appears
What absorption looks like
The shape is always the same: volume goes up, price does not follow.
1,530 contracts sold aggressively into 4508.00 — price low remains 4508.00. Not one tick of downside progress.
Every one of those sell orders was filled. Someone bought all 1,530 contracts passively and did not step back. On a candle chart this is a small lower wick.
On a footprint it is unmistakable once you know the shape: one price level with far more volume than anything around it, sitting at the extreme of the bar, with the aggressive side heavily weighted in the direction that failed.

The low of the bar has by far the most volume, and the aggressive side there was sellers. Sellers got their fills. They did not get their move.
02 — The most important section in this course
Absorption does not mean reversal
Common mistake
"There's absorption at the low — buy it."
This is the single most expensive misunderstanding in retail order flow. Absorption tells you a large passive participant is present and is currently winning the exchange at that price. It tells you nothing about whether they will still be there in ninety seconds.
Be precise about what you actually know:
What absorption tells you
Significant passive liquidity exists at this price, and aggressive participants pushing the other way are being filled without getting paid. There is a real participant defending here, right now.
What it does not tell you
Whether the absorber will keep defending, how large their remaining size is, why they are there, or whether price will reverse. Absorbers get run over regularly.
Large passive participants are not automatically right. A bank filling a client order, a fund scaling into a position, or a market maker managing inventory may all absorb heavily and then simply stop — at which point price goes exactly where the aggressive side was trying to push it, often violently, because the liquidity that was holding it up has gone.
The honest framing
Absorption is evidence that a level is being defended. It raises the probability that the level holds. It is one input, and it needs confirmation from what happens next: does price actually move away from the level, and does the previously aggressive side stop pressing?
03 — The distinction
Absorption vs exhaustion vs trapped traders
These three get used interchangeably all over the internet. They are different events with different mechanics, and confusing them will cost you.

Absorption is about someone stopping the move. Exhaustion is about nobody left to continue it. Trapped is about what happens afterwards to the people who were wrong. They frequently occur in sequence — but they are not synonyms.
04 — Putting it together
A practical example
ES is trading down into the previous day's value area low, a level you marked before the open.
- Sellers press the level Three bars of sustained aggressive selling arrive at 4508. Bar deltas are strongly negative.
- Volume concentrates 4508.00 accumulates several times the volume of any surrounding level.
- Price does not extend The low stays 4508.00 across all three bars. Sellers are getting filled and going nowhere.
- The read, honestly stated A large passive buyer is defending value area low. Sellers have spent significant size and bought themselves nothing.
- What would confirm it Aggressive selling drying up, then price actually lifting away from the level with buyers taking the offer. Until price moves, absorption is a stalemate, not a win.
- What would invalidate it Price trading decisively below 4508 on continued volume. The absorber is done, and everyone who bought expecting them to hold is now on the wrong side.
Note the shape of the reasoning. Absorption gave you a level to watch and a scenario. The trade, if it exists, comes from confirmation — not from the absorption itself.
